Stegosaurus (/ ˌ s t ɛ ɡ ə ˈ s ɔːr ə s /), from Greek stegos (στέγος), which means roof, and sauros (σαῦρος), which means lizard, is a genus of herbivorous thyreophoran dinosaur. Fossils of this genus date to the Late Jurassic period , where they are found in Kimmeridgian to early Tithonian aged strata , between 155 and 150 Stegosaurus, (genus Stegosaurus), one of the various plated dinosaurs (Stegosauria) of the Late Jurassic Period (159 million to 144 million years ago) recognizable by its spiked tail and series of large triangular bony plates along the back.
